CEG & TSE successfully trial renewable black pellets
A member of IBTC announces the successful trial of over one thousand tonnes of renewable black pellets.
SSAB Brahestad successfully concludes blast furnace biocoal tests
As reported in Bioenergy International this month, Swedish-headed steel producer SSAB has disclosed test results revealing the usage of biocoal in the blast furnace at their SSAB Brahestad steelworks in Finland. Tests show that up to a 10% of biocoal blend is possible, which would reduce fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 100,000 tonnes a year. Click here to read the full article
Properties of Torrefied U.S. Waste Blends
Power generation facilities in the U.S. are looking for a potential renewable fuel that is sustainable, low-cost, complies with environmental regulation standards and is a drop-in fuel in the existing infrastructure. Although torrefied woody biomass, meets most of these requirements, its high cost, due to the use of woody biomass, prevented its commercialization. Industrial waste blends, which are also mostly … Read More
New Torrefaction Process Reduces Transportation Costs for Biomass
Researchers at Fraunhofer IGB developed an improved torrefaction process to make use of olive biomass. By LISA ANDERSON on July 9, 2018 Filed in Business Waste from olive oil production is treated at a pilot plant in Spain that uses a unique torrefaction process to reduce transportation costs for biomass and produces green chemicals as a byproduct. It allows (the treatment of) waste … Read More
Torrefaction yields lighter wood chips that are cheaper to transport
MUNICH, Germany – Because wood is heavy and logs are irregularly shaped, it costs more to transport, limiting its use as a raw material in industry. In the European Union-funded SteamBio project, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB have teamed up with various partners to change all that, developing a special steam drying technique that could … Read More
Biocoal alternative fuel for power production and heating
At several locations around the world, a partnership of international companies will start construction of facilities, where biocoal will be produced on a commercial scale. This biocoal can be used as sustainable fuel in power plants and heating installations all over the world, giving a boost to reducing climate change. Of all resources used for global energy consumption, 19.3% is … Read More
EU-funded project SteamBio produces torrefied biomass for replacing coal and yielding chemicals sustainably
04 Jun 2018 | Source: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft ACHEMA 2018: New steam drying technique yields sustainable products and production processes Industrial facilities are generally located far away from extensive forest regions. Because wood requires efforts to transport, it sees only limited use as a raw material in industry. In the EU-funded SteamBio project, researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and … Read More
Torrefied biomass coud be a promising resource for reaching blending targets in India
By Ramya Natarajan For the past several winters, Delhi has drawn global attention for its life-threatening smog levels. This is attributed, in part, to the open burning of biomass residues like paddy straw and stubble in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. Ironically, while these residues can contribute to lethal levels of air pollution when burnt, they can in … Read More
New fuels project in China targets cooking in the commercial sector
New fuels project in China targets cooking in the commercial sector The Alliance partnered with China’s Ministry of Agriculture, Shell, local governments, and Shengzhou Stove Manufacturer (SSM) to develop and launch a new clean cooking project in Zhejiang Province of China. The project aims to encourage commercial enterprises to switch from wood and coal to biomass pellets. According to the … Read More
